FRANCOIS I OF FRANCE PLACES “LA GIOCONDA” AT HIS BATHROOM

Fontainebleau (France), 20th August 1517

The King Francois I (a Leonardo da Vinci’’s friend and patron) has acquired the painting known as “LA GIOCONDA at a price of 4000 gold escudos.

The Monarch has given instructions to place this painting at the Fontainebleau Palace’s bathroom.

Although La Gioconda was made at a rich Florentine merchant’s wife’s request, she refused to pay him, since Leonardo da Vinci had taken too long to finish the painting.
